Lion Paul Whelan
Zone Chair H7 2009 - 2010

Paul grew up in Coupeville, Washington on beautiful Whidbey Island. After graduating from high
school, he left for college and didn’t return for 40 years. During those 40 years he earned a Ph.D. in
Clinical Psychology and held a number of different jobs including Parole Agent, Professor, Clinical
Psychologist, Administrator, and Director of Hospital Quality. In 1996, he and his wife, Karen, began
to vacation in Coupeville during the summers. It soon became apparent that even though they had
lived in Wisconsin, Arizona, Germany, Michigan, Utah, New York, North Carolina and Indiana there
was no place that could equal Coupeville for them. So they packed up and moved back to Paul’s
hometown. To make a living, Karen who had been a Special Education teacher, bought an ice cream
shop and to keep her costs down hired Paul to be her CFO, Marketing Director, Waffle Cone Maker,
Ice Cream Scooper, and general all around gofer. As the shop got established, Karen allowed Paul a
little time off and he decided to join the Central Whidbey Lions Club, known locally as “The Hands
on Club.” With the Lions he became involved with numerous club projects, served on the Board of
Directors for a number of years and last year served as President. Sine the beginning, Karen has
closed the ice cream shop in the winter so that she and Paul can travel and visit ice cream shops
throughout the world. This past winter they flew to New Zealand, hopped on a motorcycle, rode 3200
miles, and ate ice cream at each stop. As Zone Chair for H7 Paul is looking forward to serving Lions
in a new and exciting capacity. He is very appreciative for the confidence that the H7 clubs have
placed in him and hopes to live up to their expectations.
